GIRISHA FERNANDO
Girisha Fernando ist Musikkurator, Künstlerischer Leiter, Musiker und Produzent. Der kuratorische Ansatz verfolgt stets die Begegnung von künstlerischem Anspruch mit den verschiedensten Zielgruppen, wobei kulturelle Vielfalt, thematische Kohärenz und innovative Programmgestaltung in verschiedenen Musikgenres und Formaten betont werden. Der Fokus liegt auf kollaborative Projekte mit einem internationalen, lokalen und subkulturellen Ansatz kombiniert mit einer interdisziplinären Methodik.
2007-2011 war er verantwortlich für die Programmgestaltung des Musikklubs Schwarzes Schaf in Augsburg, in dem zahlreiche Musikveranstaltungen aus Bereichen der Subkultur eine Heimat fanden.
Seit 2009 ist er Musikkurator des Brechtfestivals und konnte hierbei popkulturelle Formate wie die Lange Brechtnacht, den Poetry Slam oder Konzerte wie die von Patti Smith oder MulatuAstatke als zentrale Elemente des Festivals verankern.
Er ist Künstlerischer Leiter des Water & Sound Festival (seit 2011, vormals „Festival der Kulturen“) bei dem jährlich internationale Größen der Weltmusik auftreten und auch ambitionierte Eigenproduktionen u.a. mit Mercedes Peon, Fatoumata Diawara und den Augsburger Philharmoniker verwirklicht werden. Ab 2022 wurde das Festival unter seiner Leitung ausgeweitet, inhaltlich vertieft und unter der Einbeziehung der Vieldimensionalität des globalen Themas Wasser weiterentwickelt – ein Festival für globale Musik in der Wasserstadt Augsburg (UNESCO Weltkulturerbe).
Er kuratiert sporadisch „The Sounds Of God “ mit spiritueller Musik, den interkulturellen Musikslam „Zugvogel Slam“ für das Kulturhaus Kresslesmühle, und seit 2019 das Format „brechtbühne un / plugged“ am Staatstheater Augsburg.
Als Bassist spielte er zahlreiche Tourneen, Festivals und Klubgigs in ganz Europa u.a. NuJazz mit Les Gammas und On The Offshore, Dancehall-Reggae mit Nosliw, HipHop mit Dipol, Jazz mit Chris Hirson’s Seta Tunes, FreeJazz mit FreeModalJazzThing. Mit Misuk vertonte er Texte Brechts neu für die Alben „Misuk“ (2012) und „Nachschlag“ (2015) und schrieb Musik für die Theaterproduktionen „Baal“ (2013) und „Liebe Macht Tod“ (2015) der Bluespotsproductions, sowie Musik für „Peer Gynt“ (2017), „Fatzer“ (2018) und „Der Sturm“ (2019) am Staatstheater Augsburg. 2024 erschien zuletzt das von ihm produzierte und co-komponierte Debut Album von Aylins’s Soulgarden (CPL Music).
2019 wurde er mit dem Popkultur Preis ROY der Stadt Augsburg für „herausragende Leistungen /Lebenswerk“ ausgezeichnet.

Girisha Fernando is a music curator, artistic director, musician, and producer from Augsburg, Germany of German-Sri Lankan origin. His curatorial approach centres on fostering encounters between artistic excellence and diverse audiences, emphasizing cultural variety, thematic coherence, and innovative programming across music genres and formats. He focuses on collaborative projects with both international and local partners, integrating subcultural perspectives and interdisciplinary methods.
As music curator of the Brechtfestival since 2009, he has shaped its pop-cultural profile with various formats and concerts featuring artists like Patti Smith, Mulatu Astatke and Fire!. Since 2011, Girisha has served as the artistic director of the Water & Sound Festival, a leading platform for global music in Augsburg (UNESCO World Heritage). Under his curation, the festival expanded to feature international world music artists and ambitious in-house productions—collaborating with acts such as Emel Mathlouthi, Fatoumata Diawara, Mayra Andrade amongst others, together with the Augsburg Philharmonic Orchestra. Since 2022, he has further developed its artistic vision, deepening engagement with the multifaceted global topic of water. He has also curated projects such as the spiritual music series The Sounds Of God. As a musician and producer, he has recorded numerous albums, written music for theatre, and toured extensively in Europe with projects including On The Offshore, Misuk, and Les Gammas. His recent productions include In Exile (2021, On The Offshore) and the album Bu bir demdir by Aylin’s Soulgarden (CPL Music, 2024). 2019, ROY Award for outstanding achievement and lifetime contribution to pop culture.
